Their overall action, coupled with a choice of lengths and ratings, ensures there’s a rod to suit every scenario. But what if you want a single rod that you can use in any given situation? In steps the NEW 10’6″ #3 Nymphmaniac! the ultimate euro nymphing rod, allowing you to cover everything from small streams to bigger rivers.

Euro Nymphing Rod with Tweed Grayling

As a ‘nymphing specific’ rod, the Nymphmaniac’s key attributes, make it the optimal choice for each nymph fishing technique. The down-locking reel seat is a huge asset. The position of the reel on the rod dictates its balance point and how weight is distributed. By spreading the weight throughout the blank, it makes our fishing experience a lot easier on the body. Rather than our shoulder and back muscles doing the work, the reel counter balances the long rod, reducing fatigue.

Being balanced improves sensitivity, allowing us to feel the nymphs tracking as they drift in the current. As a result, you will feel far more takes through the blank, however gentle they may be, and react faster

EURO NYMPHING ROD – KEY FEATURES

Other key features that make up this sublime nymphing tool are the positioning of the guides. By reducing the distance between the guides and sneaking the stripping ring a little closer to the reel, there’s less room for line sag. This is a killer when nymphing, so less sag, means more direct contact with the flies, better control hook sets.

A final masterstroke is the addition of a snake guide below the tip ring. This alleviates line wrap, something typical when using thin leaders, saving a lot of faffing around, allowing more fishing time.

This euro nymphing rod covers all the bases; it allows me to search the water methodically, without fear of spooking fish. In addition, the 10’6 length and line weight means I can target grayling at close quarters or from range. No matter what type of water they are lying in and it lets me quickly adapt to changing condition

EURO NYMPHING ROD – TOTAL CONTROL

For close-up bugging, where the nymphs pass close to our position before rising up as the current takes hold, the 10’6″ #3 lets me stay in control from the moment the nymphs hit the water to the lift and strike; I’m in constant contact. In addition, it has the sensitivity of touch to register takes throughout the flies’ track downstream and, once hooked, lets me enjoy the fight without fear; however, light the tippet.

All this may seem obvious in a rod designed for nymphing, but having fished this style for many years, I know some rods just don’t cut the mustard.

EURO NYMPHING ROD – KEEPING CONTACT

Regarding the nitty-gritty, there are a few crucial points where contact with the flies is paramount. One is the small, yet pivotal taking zone as the flies drift past you, only a foot or so away and crucially where the rod tip is at its highest point. It’s here where a lot of rods lose that all-important connection. The Nymphmanaic, even at this acute angle, keeps you in control, losing nothing in the way of feel. It maintains feedback through the rod that says your flies are still fishing and that you can react at any moment.

Another taking point is as the flies rise at the end of the drift. If the rod is too soft, you will fail to feel the fish intercept the fly and miss the split-second opportunity to set the hook. On the other hand, an overly stiff rod can lead to breakages on the strike. Remember, we will use thin-diameter tippets, sometimes down to 0.10mm in winter. This, coupled with sometimes-powerful flows, means the rod needs to have a perfect balance to cope and this 10’6″ #3 does it perfectly.

This balance and sensitivity let me use the rod’s tip to manipulate my flies effectively. A heavy point fly flicked up off the riverbed raises the lighter, more delicate offerings on the droppers. This gives the impression of an ‘ascending nymph’, an easy meal about to get away, and something, when in amongst shoaling fish like grayling, can prove almost impossible for them to refuse.

EURO NYMPHING ROD – ACCURACY AT RANGE

When faced with heavily fished venues, the rod’s longer reach lets you present your fly with accuracy and from a distance. This can prove crucial to avoid spooking your intended target. Pressured fish are a tough nut to crack and, once spooked, are impossible to catch. Having the extra reach and delicate presentation of a longer, lightweight outfit massively increases your chances. This model excels in sight fishing on chalk streams, limestone rivers, or even slow-moving pool tailwater.

Its versatility, feel, and balance give me complete control and perfect presentation, which is why I continue to reach for the Nymphmaniac 10’6″ #3 repeatedly.
